Martinique is one of the smaller Caribbean islands, but still has all the elements for a perfect island getaway. White sandy beaches lead the way to crystal clear waters filled with an abundance of aquatic life, while the shore is peppered with luscious rainforests and colourful towns just waiting to be explored. With its French-Creole influence, it has its own distinct identity, something you can really feel when speaking with locals and visiting its quaint boutiques and restaurants. But if you’re planning a trip, one thing you want to consider before booking your flights is when is the best time to visit Martinique?

When is the best time to visit Martinique?

The good news is, there isn’t really a bad time to visit. Martinique enjoys warm temperatures all throughout the year, with the average annual temperatures hitting around 26°C. However, the island does have distinct dry and rainy seasons, which can make some months better suited to a beach holiday, hiking adventure or budget-friendly getaway than others.

For the best combination of sunshine, lower rainfall and comfortable temperatures, December to April is generally the best time to visit Martinique. However, travelling outside this peak period can bring lower prices, fewer visitors and an even greener landscape, so it’s all things to consider.

When is The Best Time to Visit Martinique for Sunshine?

If you want to spend your time in Martinique swimming in the sea and exploring the island without worrying about rain, the best time to visit Martinique is December to April. This is the dry season (known locally as Carême.) Rainfall is generally lower, the skies are often clearer and the northeast trade winds help keep temperatures comfortable. Daytime temperatures typically sit around the high 20s, while the sea remains warm enough for swimming, making it a great time to come as a family.

January and February are your best choice if you want slightly cooler conditions for hiking and sightseeing, but still be able to relax beach or poolside. The only downside to visiting between December and April is that it’s the most popular season for tourists, so flights, hotels and car hire can be more expensive, plus the island will be busier.

When are the Best Events in Martinique?

There are many events in Martinique throughout the year that you could base your trip around. The most famous of these is undoubtedly Carnival where festivities begin in January. Parades happen every weekend culminating in late February or early March with four days of Parades, parties and concerts. There’s also the Transatlantic Regatta, Cap-Martinique, which takes place in April; Martinique’s International Hiking Festival in June; the annual Raid des Alizés in November; and Boucans de la Baie in Fort-de-France Bay, where the sky lights up with fireworks over the water. Dates for events can sometimes vary, so check the official websites of the organisers before you book your flights to avoid disappointment.

When is the Cheapest Time to Visit Martinique?

If keeping the cost of your holiday down is more important than having completely predictable weather, consider travelling during the shoulder seasons. April, May and November can offer an attractive compromise between weather and price. As the peak season begins to wind down, visitor numbers can fall and accommodation rates can be more affordable.

May and June you’re likely to see more clouds and tropical showers, but they are short lived as opposed to endless rain. The advantage is that Martinique’s landscapes become increasingly lush and green. For travellers who don’t mind taking a chance on a passing shower, these months can provide a particularly good balance between weather, crowds and cost.

What’s Martinique like in the Rainy Season?

Martinique’s rainy season generally runs from June to November. This doesn’t mean that the island experiences constant rain. Instead, tropical showers tend to be more frequent, particularly during the summer and early autumn, and humidity is higher. The increased rainfall turns the island’s landscape into one blooming with colour, making it a beautiful time to explore the forests, waterfalls and hiking trails.

What’s Martinique like in Hurricane Season?

The hurricane season officially runs from June to November, with September and October being the months where the risk of a hurricane is highest across the wider Caribbean. This doesn’t mean you should rule these months out however. Tropical weather varies considerably from year to year, and a rainy-season holiday can still involve plenty of sunshine! You can visit during this time and have beautiful weather the majority of your trip, with occasional showers. The best thing to do is check the weather forecast and travel advice shortly before travelling. Don’t forget to ensure you have good travel insurance just in case your plans have to change.

When Is the Best Month to Visit Martinique?

For most travellers, December to April is the best time to visit Martinique. You’ll have the best chance of enjoying sunny days, warm temperatures and relatively dry conditions, making it particularly good for beaches, boat trips, hiking and exploring the island. You can also experience the joy of Carnival over this time too. Yet, for good weather and fewer crowds, April or November is worth considering, particularly if you want to save some money. August can get very busy as it’s the peak holiday month for French travellers, so this is something to also keep in mind.

Martinique is ultimately a year-round destination that can be enjoyed any month. Even during the rainy season, tropical showers can be brief, while the additional rainfall brings the island’s forests and mountains to life. WHether you want a classic Caribbean beach escape in January to get away from the cold of the UK, or are looking for a greener, quieter adventure later on in the year, Martinique has you covered.
