St. Kitts Golf hits new heights with Barmy Army PartnershipRoyal St. Kitts Golf Club (Large)

If you thought the Barmy Army was just about mad cricket fans and sea songs, then think again. Today’s Barmy Army members are serious about their Sport and Golf is the sport of choice when they are not ‘madly’ cheering at cricket matches, dressing up and waving flags.

With Golf equally high on the agenda in St. Kitts, what better way to raise the profile of the island to the UK golf market, then to combine these two great sports and partner with Barmy Army Golf.   Known to many as the UK’s largest and most successful organisation which helps cricket fans support their team both at home and abroad, Barmy Army has expanded its sports portfolio to include golf.

Last month in the beautiful surroundings of Burhill Golf Club, a charity four ball brought together St. Kitts VIP’s, golf media, executives and avid golf consumers, providing the setting for the launch of a unique three year partnership between St. Kitts and Barmy Army Golf, announced later over dinner by the Honourable Lindsay F.P. Grant, Minister of Tourism, International Trade, Industry and Commerce for St. Kitts.

We are proud to partner with such a unique and successful organisation as the Barmy Army and I am looking forward with much optimism over the next three years and the international attention this partnership will bring to our destination.   Importantly, such a partnership will also greatly help in making the game more accessible and affordable to all.” Minister Grant

The historic occasion represented the first strategic golf  partnership for the destination in the UK which, over a three year period, will focus on the hosting of annual St. Kitts & Barmy Army exclusive golf events, with a special inaugural golf tournament to be launched in November 2016.

The island is blessed with amazing golf courses and people. We cannot wait to promote St Kitts to our members and other organisations and associations.”  Paul Burnham, MD, Barmy Army Ltd.

The partnership joins alliances such as the St. Kitts & Nevis Admiral’s Cup Pro-Am, now in its 6th and successful year and the St. Kitts 2-ball Shootout, launched in August 2015 in conjunction with the Golf Association of Canada.

The St. Kitts-Nevis Admiral’s Cup Pro-Am is the destination’s premier event for visiting golfers. Played annually in February, the event is a five-day team tournament in which a PGA Club Professional and three amateurs pair up to compete against other teams from golf clubs across the world. The St. Kitts-Nevis Admiral’s Cup Pro-Am has been the only golf event of its kind that is hosted simultaneously by two Caribbean islands featuring play on two world-class golf courses.

In 2016, in addition to the spectacular Royal St. Kitts Golf Club, the Pro-Am will use the island’s newest course, Irie Fields Golf Club at Kittitian Hill, as an official tournament course.  Designed by European golfer, Ian Woosnam, Irie Fields is a dramatic, hillside course that combines links and parkland architecture features, to present 18 fantastic holes that overlook the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the neighbouring Eastern Caribbean islands of Eustatius and Saba.

Joining Irie Fields is the much anticipated Tom Fazio championship course, to be located at Christophe Harbour on St. Kitts’ southeast peninsula in time for the opening of Park Hyatt St. Kitts, during the 2016/2017 winter season.

Together, they create a collection of championship courses unmatched in a destination of St. Kitts size and therefore well positioned to become a destination of choice for golfers.
