The end of the year culminates in the St. Kitts & Nevis National Carnival, the biggest event of the year, (also known as Sugar Mas). In the run up to Christmas and New Year, the streets erupt in a series of colorful parades, processions, and street performances. Clowns, Moko-Jumbies dancing on stilts, and troupes from all over the island entertain the crowds with their frenzied dancing to the infectious beat of soca and calypso music, while Carnival Queen and Talented Teen contestants show off dazzling costumes, months in the making.

Festival of Lights & Renewal

Festival of Light is celebrated on National Day, December 13th,
the day associated with Saint Lucia or Saint Lucy, the patron saint of light,
symbolizing the triumph of light conquering dark, good overcoming evil
and the renewal of life. The celebrations start around the first week of
December with a Lantern Competition, depicting wide varieties of themes,
for instance local calypso or other artistic or social events; historical buildings
or everyday objects. It culminates on the eve of Saint Lucia Day, December 12th,
with the Parade of Lanterns in the streets of Castries, accompanied by
a variety show of Christmas songs and dance, followed by the turning on of the lights
on the Derek Walcott Square and finally a fireworks display.
